Rats in Anguilla Hotels!

by Dia

I have only been to Anguilla once but I too fell in love with the island. As I came with a limited budget I chose a hotel that was small and quaint. The room was enormous and it had a kitchen too!!! The balcony was incredible with a view of the water. I don't want to mention the name of this place...I still feel so upset by my experience as I truly loved this place and met people during my stay that had returned to this same place as many as 14 times...

For me, my room came with a friend...a few furry friends. At first I thought I might be imagining the little darting motions from the recesses of my peripheral vision. But, then my friend made him/herself quite visible on several occassions. And, NO I did not leave ANY FOOD OUT FOR THEM...BEFORE DURING OR AFTER MY VISIT. One night, since my sleep was so light and vigilant - I saw my friend come from the living room into my bedroom - he climbed up the curtains and ran across the curtain rod. I thought he might jump on my bed so I clapped my hands and he scurried off.

Yes, I did tell the owner/managers...and at first they chose to put some type of natural repellent around my room. However, that did not work. I don't believe they put out any rat poison...
Is this typical? I have never seen a rat in a hotel room before. I don't want to spread around the name of this place... as in general it is a most wonderful place. I just want to know if this is typical? I really would like to go back to this place but haven't - top rat averse.

I didn't ask for a refund or a discount - and they didn't offer...funny - Anyway, I am interested to know other's experiences...

Nori's Reply: That does not sound fun or typical by any means! I have seen rats on Anguilla territory... but ONLY Scrub Island. They appear in some older homes here apparently, but I have yet to see one in my house or in any hotel. How did you hear of the hotel you stayed at? Did anyone else have rats in their room? Sorry to hear about those pesky rodents, hopefully they won't keep you from returning! :-)
